“Emory Douglas: Black Panther” includes a wide variety of Douglas’s work done while a member of the Black Panther Party. Curated by the Los Angeles artist Sam Durant, whose work often deals with political and cultural subjects in American history, the show includes approximately 165 posters, newspapers, and prints dating from 1967–76.

Durant met Emory Douglas in 2002 and began working on a book of Douglas’s work, which resulted in a monograph published in 2007. Two years later Durant curated “Black Panther: The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, which serves as a model for the exhibition at the New Museum.

The presentation of “Emory Douglas: Black Panther” at the New Museum is organized by Laura Hoptman, Kraus Family Senior Curator with Amy Mackie, Curatorial Assistant.

Station 4 is proud to present the art of Emory Douglas, former Minister of Culture of The Black Panther Party, by introducing three historic propaganda art pieces originally published in the Black Panther newspaper in 1970 and 1971.

The featured limited edition art pieces are the first of a twelve print series and the images have never before been available to the public as art prints.

New Art Print by Winston Smith “Mona Mohawk”

She is older than the stones among which she rests. Her smooth, plucked eyebrows and peculiar fashion of the day create a serene and penetrating gaze. Her timeless, subtitle smile beguiles us. Her calm grace, inner light and singularly unique charms entrap and disarm us.

This very special and very limited edition of 13 hand-pulled prints available exclusively from Station 4, featuring wildly inspired color effects is the newest and perhaps the most audacious version of Mona Mohawk yet.

We’re hoping the spirit of Leonardo is benevolently gazing down on our humble efforts and giving us his blessing in this artistically sincere rendering of his timeless masterpiece.

Eminent Domain Awareness Group Show

Awareness raising event and reception for “Eminent Domain”

Friday June 5th, 2009
7pm – Midnight

Varnish Fine Art
77 Natoma Street
San Francisco, CA 94105
www.varnishfineart.com

Join us for an evening of spoken word, live music and art as we raise awareness about Eminent Domain in our neighborhood.

Few know that a San Francisco agency called the Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA) is eliminating 33 small local businesses, including Varnish and numerous residences in order to demolish all properties and later resell the land.

The TJPA is forcing Varnish, among the first tenants and years before the end of the lease to vacate this September for an October 2009 demolition of its nearly 100 year old building. This gallery and wine bar will have to vacate 77 Natoma Street, but the owners hope that by raising awareness about this eminent domain threat they can stop its abuses on this and future San Francisco projects.

Tonight’s event features legendary Dead Kennedys frontman and activist Jello Biafra, recent Vice Presidential candidate and former SF Board of Supervisors President Matt Gonzalez, newsman and Argonaut Editor Warren Hinckle, live screenprinting by Political Gridlock and The Firehouse and music by Burnt House and DJ Evil Justin + surprise guest performers!

Admission is free, but you must be 21+ to attend so please bring ID.
